Wallace Berman ウォレス・バーマン Assemblage Verifax Collages

Wallace Berman (b.1926 Staten,NY) 

"Assemblage Art"の代表的なアーティスト。家具工場で働く傍ら、端材で立体造形物を作るうちにアーティストとなる。アメリカ西海岸を主な拠点として、ウェストコーストジャズやビートニクとの関係、彼の作品でページが埋められ仲間内で配られた雑誌"Semina" や "Verifax Collages"と呼ばれるコピーを繰り返した紙片をグリッド上にレイアウトした作品が有名。いわゆる"ローアート"なので2005年くらいからようやく評価され研究されるようになってきた。1976年の誕生日に交通事故で死亡。


Robert Heinekenと Wallace Berman の二人展"Speaking in Tongues: Wallace Berman and Robert Heinecken, 1961-1976"が Armory Center for the Arts で2012年10月から開催予定。

雑誌の写真を素材にフォトグラムで制作 雑誌にそのままプリントしたり、ＧＡＰの広告をそのまま利用したものなどダダや、またモチーフの選択にシュルレアリスムからの影響がうかがえる MoMAの"Mirrors and Windows"展にも彼の作品"Refractive Hexagon"がフィーチャーされている。好きな作家なので改めて加筆する予定。

2010年のLACMAの"New Topographics"展を契機に、ロバート・アダムスやルイス・ボルツ以外の写真家の再評価も進み情報がネットでもみられるようになったので以下にまとめておきました。

1975年当時のオリジナルの"New Topographics"展はほとんど注目されずに終わった展覧会だったそうです。一方、ドイツ・日本の写真家には熱心に受け入れられて、その後アメリカのギャラリーやディーラーがそれらの写真を商品として扱うようになったのを受けてまた美術館が収蔵し研究が進み 2010年 ロスアンジェルスの美術館での回顧展へとつながったようです。40分過ぎたくらいから Frank Gohlke がニュートポグラフィックのキーアイデアや当時の状況を話しています。Frank Gohlke の写真家ならではの視点が印象的です。

アメリカの美術館による評価まで、この一見退屈な（しかし美しい）風景写真が評価されるまで３５年かかったことになります。

George Eastman House で開かれた New Topographics (1975) Contemporary Photographers Toward A Social Landscape(1966) といった展覧会がアメリカではさほど話題にならなかったものが、海外では重要な出来事として記憶され影響を与えたのは興味深い現象です。
